Nguzo Saba | A Core Value System

The Seven Principles are posed as a moral minimum set of values for personal and community development.  They are standards of excellence pointing toward practice which leads to the best of what it means to be a productive person in and for the community.  They stress linking the personal and the communal in ongoing mutual and beneficial ways. The Seven Principles in Swahili and English are:

01UMOJA (Unity)To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation and race.

02KUJICHAGULIA (Self-Determination) To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves speak for ourselves.

03UJIMA (Collective Work and Responsibility) To build and maintain our community together and make our brother’s and sister’s problems and to solve them together.

04UJAMAA (Cooperative Economics) To build our own stores, shops and other businesses and to profit from them together.

05NIA (Purpose) To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.

06KUUMBA(Creativity) in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.

07IMANI (Faith) To believe with our heart in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.
