The tiny San Diego community of Broadway Heights has banded together to repair and ship bicycles to teachers in Mexico, to give its children cash for good grades and to take a cross-country trip to landmark places such as Memphis, Tenn., Selma, Ala., and Vicksburg, Miss.

Now it's coming together for the common good once again.

This time, it's creating a community technology center/cyber cafe in the garage of the Laconia Street home of Robert and Barbara Robinson.

A computer lab is being set up for use by community members young and old, and the list of local officials set for a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday morning includes San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, Council President Tony Young and Police Chief William Lansdowne, Robert Robinson said.

The dozen refurbished Dell computers were donated by the San Diego Futures Foundation, which obtained them from San Diego County government. The center's availability is a work in progress; Robinson said he expects it to be open at least four days a week, likely in the afternoons after school.

"I hope it will continue to make the community grow," he said. "It will continue to deter crime. It will continue to keep the young kids involved. It provides technology for people in the community, and gets the old people out of the house."

Broadway Heights is a community of 629 residents in southeastern San Diego bounded to the south by Mallard Street, to the west by Federal Boulevard and to the north and east by the city of Lemon Grove. We profiled the community in January here.
